Quiet summer pool after closing time
Vashon Community Pool
Vashon Park Community Pool is due for a major update. The Vashon Park District (VPD) has identified the pool as a high priority project in its 2024-2029 Comprehensive Plan and was identified as a high priority item in VPD’s last community survey. The pool has served the Island well since it was built but time has taken its toll.
In 2017, the Vashon Seals Swim Team, who uses the Vashon Community Pool as their practice facility, raised funds to purchase a temporary dome to cover the pool providing year-round use for the team and the entire community. In 2024, both VPD and the Vashon Seals were awarded separate grants from King County to fund replacement of the dome,. The dome has an expected life span of 5-7 years. The year-round usage of the facility supports a permanent infrastructure upgrade.
While conceptual design is in the early stages, it is anticipated that the renovation will include a retractable roof to allow for year-round swimming, a warming pool, and a water feature and slide for kids. In addition, the existing infrastructure operating the pool will be updated. The VPD expects the new facility to allow for current programming, such as lap swimming, youth and adult swim lessons, water aerobics, and the Vashon Seals Swim Team’s practice facility; programming expansion with the renovation could include additional interactive water features, the ability to host swim meets, heated locker rooms, and other new programs that serve a diverse audience. The goal is to make the facility and its programs appealing to more of our Island community.
With planning in the earliest stages, we are estimating the need to raise approximately $300,000 to complement VPD budget allocation and grants. This goal will be adjusted upon completion of design and financial projections.
